How Unions Work

Sign Union Cards

Authorization cards = a petition to the NLRB saying you want a vote. They are 100% confidential — your boss never sees them.

30% Cards → File with NLRB

Once 30% of workers sign, you file for an official election. Most organizers aim for 60-70% before filing.

The Vote: 50% + 1 Wins

Secret ballot election run by the NLRB. Simple majority of those who vote wins the union.

Negotiate Your Contract

Average timeline: ~9 months from first card to contract. Your employer is legally required to bargain in good faith.

Talk about unions at work (on breaks, off-the-clock)
Hand out flyers in non-work areas
Wear union buttons or shirts
Sign union cards — boss can't ask or find out
Attend union meetings on your own time
Refuse to attend captive audience meetings (in some states)
File ULP charges if your employer retaliates
